Jeremy Clarkson eviscerates the new Honda Insight

May 19th, 2009
Comments Off

An outspoken man challenges automotive PC.

Hmmm. I would not accuse Honda of telling porkies. That would be foolish. But I cannot see how making a car with two motors costs the same in terms of resources as making a car with one.

The nickel for the battery has to come from somewhere. Canada, usually. It has to be shipped to Japan, not on a sailing boat, I presume. And then it must be converted, not in a tree house, into a battery, and then that battery must be transported, not on an ox cart, to the Insight production plant in Suzuka. And then the finished car has to be shipped, not by Thor Heyerdahl, to Britain, where it can be transported, not by wind, to the home of a man with a beard who thinks he’s doing the world a favour.

Why doesn’t he just buy a Range Rover, which is made from local components, just down the road? No, really — weird-beards buy locally produced meat and vegetables for eco-reasons. So why not apply the same logic to cars?

Clarkson DOES hope Honda sells a boatload, if only to give them enough profits to invest in something more worthwhile.

Honor killing: Sows and piglets bludgeoned with iron bars so that male pigs may die honorably with a slit throat.

Or, at least that’s how I read it:

Only the males are killed in accordance with the rules,” said journalist Heba Nasreddin, while “the piglets and sows are hit with an iron bar and left to bleed to death.”

Weird, how different religions approach killin’ stuff.

Oh yeah, this is about that swine flu thing from like three weeks ago.

Mickey Kaus shocked – SHOCKED! – by BHO’s surprise amnesty announcement

April 10th, 2009

Mickey -

Although you had some misgivings about Obama’s fuzziness on immigration amnesty, you still voted for him.   Not that McCain offered a stark alternative on this issue.

Now you seem surprised that he’s virtually opened the immigration floodgates without so much as enacting a single law?

It’s hard to believe Obama adviser Cecilia Munoz doesn’t realize reopening the amnesty issue could have this effect.

No.  It’s not hard to believe that Munoz, a lifelong, strident activist for immigration rights, failed to estimate the effect of reopening this issue.  Couldn’t have seen that one coming, eh?  What is hard to believe is that Munoz didn’t float this even sooner.

Do liberals think that none of these silly little academic debates we have online have any real world impact?

Media Matters: Arbiters of insignifcant bullshit

March 28th, 2009
Comments Off

Media Matters calls out Sean Hannity:

Sean Hannity claimed that President Obama has proposed “nationalized health care,” similar to programs in Great Britain and Canada. In fact, earlier that day, Obama explicitly rejected scrapping the U.S. health-care system in favor of the British or Canadian model.

Now, although the President may have said he wants universal health coverage:

OBAMA: Now, the question is, if you’re going to fix it, why not do a universal health-care system like the European countries? I actually want a universal health-care system. That is our goal. I think we should be able to provide health insurance to every American that they can afford and that provides them high quality.

So I think we can accomplish it. Now, whether we do it exactly the way European countries do or Canada does is a different question, because there are a variety of ways to get to universal health-care coverage.

. . do you think for one minute that he could accomplish this without pairing it with some massively expanded, government-administered program?  And wow, look that this–Nancy Pelosi just happens to be talking about providing a government-run program.  Wow, what timing!

Hannity is guilty only of being slightly unspecific.

The concept of independent human liberty is doomed

March 16th, 2009

Shelby Steele: A cogent observation on how activist, redemptive liberalism exploits weaknesses in the conservative construct.

When redemption became a term of power, “redemptive liberalism” was born — a new activist liberalism that gave itself a “redemptive” profile by focusing on social engineering rather than liberalism’s classic focus on individual freedom. In the ’60s there was no time to allow individual freedom to render up the social good. Redemptive liberalism would proactively engineer the good. Name a good like “integration,” and then engineer it into being through a draconian regimen of school busing. If the busing did profound damage to public education in America, it gave liberals the right to say, “At least we did something” In other words, we are activists against America’s old sin of segregation. Activism is moral authority in redemptive liberalism.
