While I am, on the one hand, willing to believe that it is possible to find some “calm” nooks and crannies in Iraq, I find it impossible to take too much of this seriously. Talabani is probably the only Iraqi who regards Bush and the Americans as unqualified “liberators”…. and who presents Bush and Cheney with metaphoric flowers and chocolates every time he’s on American tv. Considering his circumstances, his “party line” does not surprise me. Nor would it ever entirely convince me of anything.
At least Karzai is permitted to discuss the challenges facing Afghanistan openly - as well as to discuss progress made there.

Although I wouldn’t (also) give Talabani a free ride, I would hope that we can consider some of his optimism well-founded.
