The ‘King of All Media’ - Stern Makes Debut on Satellite
January 9, 2006
New on Sirius Satellite Radio - Howard Stern.
I like Stern, and sometime soon I’ll have have some form of satellite media so I can catch his show. . . BUT. . . .Does anybody really care about all the hoopla this guy creates? I can’t tell how the hype will measure up to the reality of his new show which, if similar to his previous show, seems to be nothing more than a freakshow with strippers and alcoholic C-list celebs.

I’ve enjoyed Stern as well…but I’d never pay to hear him.

Didn’t hear the show, so I can’t say…but a few F-bombs aren’t worth ~$15/mo. I predict this is not a good career. But, I also predict that in 4 years time the for-pay satellite radio will earn it’s place next to the mini-disc format.
or (D)igital (A)udio (T)ape. Good thing Sirius sank $500mil into him. Jeeeeez.
I’ve made many a poor prediction in my days… I said that “Titanic” would flop at the box office and I bought one of those mini-disc players Chris mentions above, but I am certain that satellite radio is here to stay. I get to hear Sirius at work and while Stern is not terribly different than it was before (I didn’t hear the first broadcast but, contrary to the article Chris references, it doesn’t strike me as that obscene), the benefit is that there are no spine wrenching radio commercials to suffer through. And you have choices and can hear music that you would never hear on “free” radio in a million years. And as far as Stern’s $500 million, he’s already more than paid for himself in new subscribers (3.3 million since he signed on). At $12 per month apiece, that’s $475 million a year and Stern’s contract is spread out over five years. That puts Sirius $1.9 billion in the black (if subscribers don’t flee). Of course Stern can’t take credit for all of the new subscribers but I would imagine he’s attracted his fair share. I’m sure there were many naysayers when cable TV first came on the scene.
