State of the Union

January 31, 2006

I suspect that Lefties think conservatives host State of the Union cocktail parties for their neighborhood golf buddies and their WASPy wives. Well, we don’t. Can’t be anymore ridiculous than having an Oscar party. Or, perhaps, they think Joe Conservative will catch the speech on Fox News Channel and then pick up his latest talking points from Brit Hume and Fred Barnes. And they would be wrong again. We turned on the speech to scan the gallery for the sourpuss faces of the wounded Left and wonder if people like the smirking John Kerry can honestly believe any of their own words.

My strange life with someone else’s face

January 29, 2006

An update on the remarkable story of the woman who received the face transplant. Although I had followed the story for a while, I was surprised to learn in this article that it wasn’t that her own dog mauled her but that the dog mauled her while she lay unconscious from a drug overdose.

Did I miss this little bit of info before?

Bush Administration Tries to Silence NASA’s Climate Expert

January 29, 2006

Well someone’s got to shut Mr. Know-It-All up. Didn’t he get the memo; the end is nigh, Christians (born agains only) will be raptured, don’t sweat the small stuff (like global warming), and shut the f up with all that worldly knowledge hullabulloo?

Slow weekend

January 28, 2006

sorry, not much time to post anything this weekend. I promise I will plug back in and get absorbed soon.

Ask a Union Rep

January 25, 2006

Quick . . think fast. What if you’re a business journalist and Wal-Mart has shared a bit of good news with you. They have received 25,000 job applications to fill approximately 325 positions at a new Chicagoland location opening soon. What if you needed to write a balanced article about this news? How would you do it? By quoting a union representative for a counterpoint, of course.

Mama Sheehan, please come home . . .on second thought

January 25, 2006

Some of the most entertaining tidbits to come from the World Social Forum in Caracas are from Cindy Sheehan and not from Chavez. Show stealer!

British agents caught red-handed by Russia

January 24, 2006

This is way too obvious to be a true catch.

At least he’s happy now

January 23, 2006

Michael Schiavo remarried. Do you figure his new wife has her paperwork in line?

Trying to Triangulate

January 22, 2006

Good summary of HRC’s position on the standoff with Iran, as delivered at Princeton last week. This ended up being her least successful (and most transparent) attempt to contrive an unassailable position on the War on Terror. Although HRC has always had her detractors, I think we’re starting to see the beginning of serious criticism of her stances by normally friendly personalities in the mainstream media. HRC has been given a free pass; now, pressures on both her flanks force open previously taboo discussions on her true potential as a presidential candidate.

Does she not agree with the multilateral approach used with Iran for the last several years, which what universally accepted as the ‘America-makes-nice-with-former-allies’ option? Does she firmly believe that our intel on Iran’s programs is a slam dunk? Does she not think that positioning nearly two hundred thousand troops on either side of the Iranian “democracy” amounts to any kind of forceful message?

It’s likely that her command of the art of triangulation will not match that of her expert husband; most voters see a manipulative, empty suit rather than someone who is honestly on the right side all of the time.

Raising Hackles

January 22, 2006

Opinion Journal, commenting on OBL’s most recent statements, as translated by USA Today:

We must admit, we aren’t that interested in what Osama bin Laden has to say, so we didn’t pay much attention to his latest tape. But reader Mark Murray was good enough to identify some highlights:

* John Kerry’s talking points: “Bush does not have a plan to make his alleged victory in Iraq come true.”

* Taunting Bush over “Mission Accomplished: “And if you compare the small number of dead on the day that Bush announced the end of major operations in that fake, ridiculous show aboard the aircraft carrier with the tenfold number of dead and wounded who were killed in the smaller operations, you would know the truth of what I say.”

* Selectively citing opinion polls: “But I plan to speak about the repeated errors your President Bush has committed in comments on the results of your polls that show an overwhelming majority of you want the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.”

* He likes the MSM: “The news of our brother mujahideen (holy warriors) is different from what the Pentagon publishes. They (the news of mujahideen) and what the media report is the truth of what is happening on the ground.”

* The neocon cabal: “The mujahideen, thank God, are increasing in number and strength–so much so that reports point to the ultimate failure and defeat of the unlucky quartet of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz.”

* Terrorist book club: “If you (Americans) are sincere in your desire for peace and security, we have answered you. And if Bush decides to carry on with his lies and oppression, then it would be useful for you to read the book ‘Rogue State.’ ”

* Reagan didn’t win the Cold War: “We were patient in fighting the Soviet Union with simple weapons for 10 years and we bled their economy and now they are nothing.”

He sounds almost like–naah, we won’t say it. Might be misconstrued as questioning someone’s patriotism.

How to scold a naughty Iran

January 18, 2006

How to handle the deepening Iranian dilemma? Simply refer the offending party to the UN Security Council, where the matter will be promptly dispatched. We can COUNT on international consensus for this one, no?

Md. Senate Overrides Veto on Wal-Mart Health Care

January 13, 2006

Md. Senate sets the precedent for states forcing corporations to steer mandatory percentages of payroll towards health benefits.

Interesting to see how this plays out–will other states follow? Kinda surprised Kalifornia didn’t beat Maryland out of the gates on this.

Local Insurgents Tell of Clashes With Al Qaeda’s Forces in Iraq

January 11, 2006

Some internecine strife in Sunni Iraq according to the New York Times.

I still maintain that Al Qaeda had no right to wage an unjust war in Iraq, especially with so few allies, such faulty intelligence, and without the blessing of the UN.

There will be no posts on Alito here

January 11, 2006

After giving it much thought, and realizing that people watching the same televised event will invariably come to different conclusions in line with their political mindset, I will not post anything regarding the Samual Alito nomination hearings.

Let the live video stream prove its own points and expose the participants’ own contrived biases. Alito a rascist? Alito a radical? C’mon. As for Teddy Kennedy, puhleeeze. As Imus says, it’s time to pin a note on his lapel and send him down to the Plaza level at the dog track.

Cold Fusion Mumbo Jumbo’ - Val Kilmer (in The Saint)

Desktop fusion is back on the table - Physicist claims to have definitive data, but can they be replicated?

It has to work, it just has to!

Another predatory teacher

January 10, 2006

According to WTOL-TV in Toledo, Ohio, a local school district has uncovered their second female teacher/male student affair in two months! Did we even hear about the first one?

This will tear your eyes apart

The ‘King of All Media’ - Stern Makes Debut on Satellite

January 9, 2006

New on Sirius Satellite Radio - Howard Stern.

I like Stern, and sometime soon I’ll have have some form of satellite media so I can catch his show. . . BUT. . . .Does anybody really care about all the hoopla this guy creates? I can’t tell how the hype will measure up to the reality of his new show which, if similar to his previous show, seems to be nothing more than a freakshow with strippers and alcoholic C-list celebs.

NOW exec calls for Paterno to resign

January 8, 2006

NOW wants Penn State football coach Joe Paterno to resign after he commented about some alleged misconduct by a player from another team.

In Caracas, Belafonte Calls Bush Terrorist

January 8, 2006

Go get ‘em Harry, you tedious idiot.

Drivers find a snitch

January 6, 2006

Interesting update on the little black boxes found in most new cars. Imagine the sorts of information the government can have about YOUR driving behavior. I guess it’s just one of those if-you-drive-by-the -rules-you-have-nothing-to-worry-about things. A bigger question arises, though—- where is the contrived media hissy fit on the personal privacy intrusions? No public tantrums from Harry Reid? No calls for investigations? No character assassinations of the Bush adminstration?

Chavez, Unhinged

January 6, 2006

Venezuela’s strongman, President Hugo Chavez, enhances his reputation as slanderer of the Western world. Some recent remarks, including this gem from December:

“Some minorities, descendants of the same ones who crucified Christ … took all the world’s wealth for themselves.”

Needless to say, the anti-defamation people (outside Venezuela, of course) are all over him.

Did the Cubans Kill JFK?

January 3, 2006

It’s somewhat pleasing to hear that there are still people doing research on a still-painful topic. I’m one to take conspiracy theories with a grain of salt, but even if Oswald was the sole gunman, why all the unnecessary trips to Mexico City? The USSR? Why are official explanations so quick to dismiss his ties to the underworld and the CIA?
A new German documentary will discuss new research on Jan 6th. Also interesting is Alexander Haig’s interpretation of why America never learned the truth about the assassins.

Mexican Rebel Leader Meets With Indians

January 2, 2006

The Mexican Zapatista leader, Subcomandante Marcos, meets with regional Indian groups. He is making the trip on a black motorcycle, drawing comparisons to the socially oriented journey of the Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara in the 1950s.

How long before this guy hooks up with Evo Morales of Bolivia, Castro, and Hugo ‘Boss’ Chavez and captures the endearment of brainless college students worldwide?
