I bet he didn't buy

Maybe it’s just me, but how does mariah carey have the best selling album of ‘05? Almost 5 million units! Who buys her sappy harlot-love garbage? Is it the pre-teen female demographic? I really don’t get it.

You’re My Boy, Blue!

December 29, 2005

Patrick Cranshaw, a working actor for more than 50 years who appeared in dozens of films before he got his “big break” playing Blue, the elder fraternity brother in the hit comedy Old School, was found dead of natural causes in his Fort Worth home on Wednesday. He was 86.

Poor old guy was tough as nails–at least in the movies.

When reports like this come in every six months or so, anti-Kyoto forces rejoice–as well they should. How can grand-scale schemes like Kyoto be taken seriously when so much remains to be understood about the nature of mankind’s relationship with the atmosphere?

A Sad Day in Britain

December 21, 2005

According to the Independent, the UK nanny state will be getting a lot more strict—the already vast network of traffic cameras will be linked (even more so) to a central database which will keep track of individual movements for any and all motor vehicles.

This is way creepy, but if you’ve been following the British motoring press for a while you’ve known this was coming and have already seen the reactions to such inevitable incrementalism.

If there is a personal liberty crowd in Britain they certainly don’t yearn for making their own headlines. . .

Saddam Echoes American Press

December 21, 2005

Saddam Hussein told his trial on Wednesday he was beaten in U.S. custody and, in an extraordinary outburst toward the end of the hearing, also said those who had tortured Iraqis should be punished for their crimes.

Did we really not expect this to happen? Can we make it any easier for this guy to poke fun at us? First we have American officials and Newsweek repeating false stories first heard in enemy propaganda, now we have a martyr on our hands who keeps up on the daily hyperventilations of the most craven elements in the American news landscape.
Next Saddam will be complaining about the budget deficit, our trade gap with China, and global warming.

U.K. scientists say 2005 hottest ever

December 17, 2005

Here is an absolute gem from the UK. From David Viner, Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia:

“It’s simple physics; more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, emissions growing on a global basis and consequently increasing temperatures,”

So we have 140 years of temperatures to study. That’s like reading one chapter of a book then attempting to write a book report. And the release of emissions into our atomosphere seems to happen in a complete vacuum, regardless of volcanic output, oceanic evaporation, variable solar activity, and, yes, the energy released bytectonic plate movement. Heck, even the Earth’s magnetic poles are shifting, but apparently that has no effect (however small) on temperatures. Nor do heat sinks created by urban environments. It’s purely an emission thang.

Why doesn’t UPI provide a counterpoint? Oh yeah, because according to people like Viner, there IS no countervailing opinion.

Navel Gazing at Newsday

December 15, 2005

In this article , James Pinkerton suggests there’s much ado about nothing. Really.

Any movie that features white people sailing off to the Third World to capture a giant ape and carry it back to the West for exploitation is going to be seen as a metaphor for colonialism and racism. That was true for the original in 1933 and for the two remakes: the campy one in 1976, and the latest, directed by Peter Jackson. (In addition, a “Kong” wannabe, “Mighty Joe Young,” has been made twice.)

Why does any body care? These days he suggest people don’t since they’re more concerned about ethnic strife than racial divide.

Truck with allegedly fake ballots detained

December 13, 2005

My first guess is that this tasty story is probably not true but there are certainly other nefarious voting schemes happeinging right under the noses of local precinct captains.

From CNN,

U.S. investigators were being sent to examine the ballots in Wasit, located on the Iranian border southeast of Baghdad.

The truck’s driver was Iranian, as was the truck’s license plate, said an Iraqi Interior Ministry source. Authorities are investigating reports that other vehicles with possible fake ballots have been trying to cross the border into Iraq.

Birds of a Feather?

December 7, 2005

Who said this first?:

“the United States had suffered a defeat in Iraq and it was only a matter of time before it pulled out its troops.

“Iraq is a catastrophe for America and Americans will leave, it will only be a matter of time.

“I say to Bush: You entered Iraq with lies, you will lose Iraq and lie about it and you will leave with the pretext that you have completed your mission … America only has to decide on the number of (troops) it wishes to lose before withdrawing.”

Looks like Al Qaeda’s deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri, beat Howard Dean to this conclusion by several months.

How embarrassing (and shameful, for that matter) for the the head of THE Democratic party to parrot the words of an arch terrorist? Several prominent Democrats have openly rebuked Dean’s comments, worried that he’s killing opportunities for them. They’re right. There is plenty of room to make reasonable criticisms of the war effort and he just thermobarically detonated their dais.

Assuming such a political statement was planned days if not weeks in advance, and knowing that such obvious comparisons would be drawn between his words and those of an Al Qaeda kingpin, can we rule out the possibility of his speechwriters simply failed to do adequate research? What other reasoned opinions does the DNC Chair share with other powerful forces? This does not bode well for disciplined debate.
